Our Story
Some good things came out of 2020…
Keeping each other safe during a global pandemic has changed how we do pretty much everything and this has certainly been true for physiotherapy. When our clinics closed, physiotherapists quickly began providing virtual care – “seeing” patients online using videoconference technology - and for me, the results of this change were both surprising and exciting.
I’ve spent so much of my career developing my manual therapy skills. I’ve used my hands to help people by “cracking” joints or using acupuncture needles to release muscles. Suddenly, I couldn’t use those skills anymore. I started to appreciate the full scope of what a physiotherapist can do and that my hands were only one of the many tools I use to provide care.
With my years of clinical experience, I found that I could assess, diagnose, and treat just as effectively, if not more so, virtually compared to in person. I shifted to an active approach and focused treatment on patient understanding, activity modification, self-care techniques, and exercise prescription. Patients expressed that they loved the convenience of virtual appointments and that they finally felt in control of their symptoms.
I found that patients were getting better quickly and with a more thorough understanding of their condition. I began demonstrating self-massage and taping techniques that patients could do on their own. I realized patients want to be able to help themselves. Further, patients were loving the fact that they didn’t have to take nearly as much time from their busy home and work schedules to see a physio. They no longer had to arrange childcare, travel to and from an appointment or find and pay for parking or transit.
I started thinking about what I always wished was better about physiotherapy care:
Accessible to more people, if we could remove barriers such as cost or travel
Science & research evidence will always be used to diagnose and treat every issue
Empowering patients through self-management & self-care so they don’t need to lie on our tables to feel better
Relationships can be built. People don’t need a referral from another health care provider to see us. I can be your physiotherapist who you can call any time you need my help.
Technology is a real game changer, and it is transforming the physiotherapy industry just as it has done to many others. Virtual care allows us to re-imagine what physiotherapy can be and to create what we want it to be. We are so excited to bring our version of physiotherapy re-imagined to you through CARYphysio.
